The popular Oliha Market in Benin City, Edo State, was thrown into confusion on Wednesday as thugs invaded the market and chased away both traders and customers.
The thugs are alleged to be loyal to the state government and Peoples Democratic Party.
They are said to have barred anyone from selling goods in the market, according to some traders, who spoke with SaharaReporters.
The people claimed the thugs were infuriated because a trader in the market was seen with Adams Oshiomhole of the All Progressives Congress.
“I was asked to send a woman away from the market because she was seen with Oshiomhole during campaign.
“They then said I should mobilise traders to follow Obaseki to PDP and vote for him but I told them that everybody had the choice to vote for whoever they want.
“Suddenly today, over 10 PDP thugs in the area came into the market and started shooting sporadically.
“Everybody had to run for their lives. As it is now, nobody has been able to return to the market,” Chief Sunny Erahengbo, Chief Security Officer of the market, narrated.
He added that the thugs were escorted by some police operatives.
He urged the state police command to ensure the safety of residents in the community.
“The Commissioner of Police should please do the needful and secure our lives and our traders.
“The police should take action before things turn around and people are being killed,” Erahengbo added.

Candidate of the All Progressives Congress in last Saturday Governorship election, Pastor Ize-Iyamu, has called on Governor Godwin Obaseki to return to APC.
In a television broadcast on Wednesday night, Ize-Iyamu said, “We are going to talk to everybody. We are going to bring everybody back. I want to salute my brother, the governor. I will like to appeal to him to return to the party. In every family, we have a disagreement.
“Let it not be said that it was this disagreement that pushed him out. I made that mistake before and I have come to realise that it was a grievous error and I will not want him as a senior brother to make the same mistake.
“I will like to appeal to him to set aside his anger and come back. In APC, he is recognised as a leader and it would be difficult for him to be recognised as a leader in the new party he is going to.
“Certainly, we are ready to work with him and all well-meaning Edo people. We believe it is time to bring peace back to Edo State.”
Obaseki polled 307,955 votes to defeat Ize-Iyamu, who secured 223,619 votes in Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The governor was disqualified from contesting the APC primary election after he fell out with Adams Oshiomhole over the running of Edo State.
But Obaseki defected to PDP where he ran for the election and won.

Congratulations to the people of Edo State on a credible and peaceful governorship election. We thank the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian security services on the positive role they played in the election and commend their work in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
We recognize the critical role that Governor Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu played in promoting peace. We also thank our civil society partners for their invaluable work in upholding democracy and accountability in this election.
The United States remains concerned with reports of some violence that did emerge during the election, and by reports of vote-buying and intimidation of both voters and civil society domestic observers. We will continue to encourage all stakeholders, including INEC, political parties, and the security services, to improve the electoral process in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election.
As a democratic partner of Nigeria, the United States remains committed to working together to achieve our mutual goals of peace and prosperity for the citizens of both our countries.
