EPL: Arsenal beat Fulham 3-0

Arsenal made a flying start to the new Premier League season as Gabriel Magalhaes grabbed a debut goal and Pierre – Emerick Aubameyang scored a stunner in Saturday’ s 3- 0 win at Fulham .
Just 48 days after last season ’s delayed conclusion, the Premier League is back and Arsenal hit the ground running with the kind of confident display that has become their hallmark since Mikel Arteta took charge .
Arsenal’ s free – flowing attack was too incisive for promoted Fulham and Alexandre Lacazette gave the visitors an early lead at Craven Cottage .
Brazilian defender Gabriel scored Arsenal’ s second after the break in his first appearance since his close – season move from Lille.
Aubameyang added the final flourish with a typically eye – catching strike that emphasised why Arsenal are so desperate for the Gabon forward to sign an extension to the contract which expires at the end of the season .
Arteta has said that fans concerned Aubameyang will leave can “ relax ” because he is “ very optimistic ” his captain will agree a new deal soon.
With former Chelsea winger Willian providing a pair of assists on his debut , it was the ideal way for Arsenal to start a season that appears full of promise after last season ’ s FA Cup triumph.
Although their eighth – placed finish in the Premier League ranked as Arsenal’ s lowest final position since 1995 , Arteta had little to do with that after taking charge in December following the dismal reign of Unai Emery .
The former Manchester City assistant coach has been a much – needed breath of fresh air for Arsenal and pushing for a place in the top four should not be beyond his revitalised team this term .
While the continued absence of fans due to the coronavirus and shorter than usual break has taken a little anticipation away from the new campaign, Arsenal were keener than most to get back in action after beating Chelsea in the FA Cup final .
The Gunners had underlined their rapid improvement by defeating Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield last month and Fulham were no match for them.
– Crumbling Fulham –
The only dark cloud for Arteta was a pre -match spat between Dani Ceballos and Eddie Nketiah .
The pair had to be separated by Arsenal team- mates after Nketiah reacted to an aggressive challenge from Ceballos while a group of players were exchanging passes in the warm – up .
Arteta must have been alarmed when Ainsley Maitland – Niles hit a weak back pass that caused confusion between Gabriel and recalled keeper Bernd Leno early on.
Aboubakar Kamara nipped in but Leno managed to save at his feet before the Fulham forward could get a shot away .
Arteta’ s worries were eased when Lacazette netted in the ninth minute.
Granit Xkaha ’ s strike forced a miscued clearance from Tim Ream and Willian pounced with a close – range shot that Fulham keeper Marek Rodak could only push out to Lacazette , who slotted home from virtually on the goalline.
It made Lacazette the first player to score the opening goal of a Premier League campaign twice after the French striker also bagged the opener in 2017- 18 .
Willian was denied a debut goal when his low free – kick cannoned off the base of the post.
Gabriel was enjoying a composed debut and the 22- year – old showed he can be a goal threat as well when he doubled Arsenal’ s lead in the 49 th minute.
Willian swung over the corner and Gabriel showed his desire as he rose above Michael Hector for an attempted header that hit his shoulder as it flashed into the net .
Fulham ’ s defence was crumbling like the recently demolished Craven Cottage stand and Aubameyang finished them off in the 57 th minute with a carbon copy of his Community Shield goal against Liverpool .
Just as at Wembley , Willian ’s superb cross -field pass picked out Aubameyang and he was allowed to advance unchecked into the area before bending a fine finish into the far corner .

West Ham United manager David Moyes and two of the club’s players have tested positive for coronavirus.
The Premier League club were informed of the positive tests while preparing for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Hull City at London Stadium.
Moyes, 57, defender Issa Diop, 23, and 24-year-old midfielder Josh Cullen will now be required to self-isolate.
“The manager and both players immediately left the stadium and have returned home,” said a club statement.
West Ham said the three men were all asymptomatic and assistant manager Alan Irvine took charge of the Hull match, which both Diop and Cullen were due to start.
Public Health England guidelines state those with Covid-19 should self-isolate for at least 10 days, meaning Moyes, Diop and Cullen will not be able to attend training or the league game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 27 September.
BBC Radio 5 Live’s John Southall said the trio travelled to the ground with the squad in two or three separate coaches.
“They say they all social distanced, the squad, from when they met up and throughout the journey,” he said.
“As soon as they arrived, the results from the tests done yesterday came through and the two players and the manager were isolated immediately in separate rooms and left the ground very quickly, I’m told.
“West Ham say they are satisfied nobody else in the squad needs to self-isolate and that is why the game went ahead.”
The news comes after Leyton Orient v Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup third round on Tuesday was called off because a number of the home players had contracted coronavirus.
It came on the day the government announced a raft of new coronavirus restrictions for England which could last for up to six months.
As part of the stricter rules, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed plans for fans to return to watch live sport events in England from 1 October will not go ahead.
Sports bodies have been told not to expect spectators at stadiums and venues until the end of March at the earliest.

wolves 6 Man City squad stretched to its limit, says Guardiola

Pep Guardiola said his squad is stretched to the limit as Manchester City prepare to launch their League Cup defense after Monday ’ s opening Premier League win against Wolves .
City claimed an impressive 3- 1 victory at Molineux on Monday as Kevin De Bruyne , Phil Foden , and Gabriel Jesus struck in their Premier League opener.
They remain without Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Oleksandr Zinchenko , Sergio Aguero , Aymeric Laporte , and Eric Garcia while Ilkay Gundogan is self – isolating after testing positive for coronavirus .
City, who have won the League Cup for the past three seasons, start the defense of their trophy against Bournemouth on Thursday and Guardiola knows they cannot afford to lose more players.
“ All we want is the seven players that are out to come back , ” he said .
“ Now we have a competition that we cannot spend the energy that we spent today , before Leicester ( on Sunday) , so we ’ re going to play mostly academy players and try to keep the energy for the Premier League .
“ With this lack of preparation and seven players out and not coming back soon , we have to keep the players from Monday as safe as possible .
“ We will see how many are available , how they recover . We have just three days . We won the Carabao ( League ) Cup three times in a row and we would like to continue but we don’ t have the players in this period to play every three days . ”
