Dominic Thiem of Austria will play Germany ’ s Alexander Zverev in the US Open final for their first Grand Slam titles after they won their last- four matches in contrasting styles Friday.
Second seed Thiem ousted third- seeded Russian and last year ’ s runner – up Daniil Medvedev in a closely fought three – setter that was packed with powerful baseline rallies and impressive serving.
The 27- year – old Thiem won 6 – 2 , 7 – 6 ( 9/7 ) 7 – 6 ( 7 /5) in 2 hr 56 min inside Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach his fourth Grand Slam final .
Earlier , Zverev came from two sets down to complete a remarkable comeback against 20th – seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta and reach his first tennis major final .
The 23 – year – old German won an error -strewn , scrappy encounter 2 – 6, 6- 3, 6- 4 , 6 – 3 in 3hr 23 min , also on the famous Ashe court.
It marked the first time in Zverev ’ s career that he came from two sets behind to win.
“ I actually looked at the scoreboard when I was down two sets to love, ” Zverev said .
“ I was like , ‘ I can ’t believe it . I ’m playing in a semi – final , I ’m supposed to be the favourite and I have no chance , I ’m playing that bad.”
Zverev made 36 unforced errors in the first two sets compared to just 12 for Carreno Busta as the nerves of the occasion seemed to get the better of him .
But Zverev began to cut down on his mistakes in the third set , upping his service game and taking control of rallies with more powerful , accurate groundstrokes.
“ I started taking the ball more on the rise. I started giving myself the chance to be the one that is aggressive , ” said the German, adding : “ I ’m through to my first Grand Slam final and that ’ s all that matters .”
Carreno Busta said he had lost “ a big opportunity ” to reach a first Slam final .
“ I made the semi – finals here . I know that is a good result, is a good performance, but now in this moment it ’s tough , ” he told reporters.
Zverev becomes the first German man to reach the final of a tennis major since Rainer Schuttler at the 2003 Australian Open .
– New winner –
This year ’s US Open field has been depleted by the absence of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal .
The tournament was blown wide open by the disqualification of world number one and heavy favourite Novak Djokovic in the last 16 for hitting a line judge with the ball .
It means Sunday’ s final will see a first – time Grand Slam champion for the first time since Croatian Marin Cilic won at Flushing Meadows in 2014.
It also means there will be a Grand Slam champion other than Djokovic , Nadal or Federer for the first time since Switzerland ’ s Stan Wawrinka won the third of his tennis majors at the US Open in 2016 .
Thiem , ranked third in the world , will be playing his second consecutive Slam final after reaching the last- two at this year ’ s Australian Open.
He also lost in the French Open final in 2018 and 2019 .
Thiem ’ s semi – final score slightly flattered him . It was a high – quality affair that saw small shifts in momentum in both players ’ direction at different stages .
Ultimately the match was decided by Thiem winning points at key moments , with Medvedev squandering a 4 – 2 lead in the second .
He was also on set point while serving at 5- 3 in the third set but Thiem won a 38- shot rally to take the game and bring the set back on serve before clinching the tie- break and the match .
“ It was great tennis from both of us , ” said Thiem , whose attention now turns to Zverev .
“ We have such a great friendship and rivalry . It ’ s really amazing thing that we will face off against each other in a Slam final ,” he added.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba “has everything” to win the Ballon d’Or in the future, says former team-mate Ander Herrera.
The Paris St-Germain midfielder is preparing to face his old club in their Champions League group game on Tuesday.
Herrera, 31, who left Old Trafford in 2019, said: “There is no other like him – one on one, box to box.
“He has everything to win the Ballon d’Or if his club fights for major trophies.”
World cup winner Pogba, 27, has made four appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring once in a 3-0 win over Brighton in the League Cup fourth round.
Herrera moved on after winning four trophies in five years at United and the Spaniard says the current side is more “mature” than the one he played in.
“There is a lot of talent, more consistent” Herrera said. “Also with [midfielder] Bruno Fernandes, they have definitely improved.
“United are progressing. They have signed the right players, I don’t think they are going backwards.”
The last time the sides met, in the last 16 of the Champions League in March 2019, a young United side overturned a 2-0 deficit to qualify for the quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory in Paris, which included an injury-time Marcus Rashford penalty.

Mueller’s form fuels calls for Germany recall

download 8 Mueller’s form fuels calls for Germany recall

Thomas Mueller can further fuel appeals for him to be recalled by Germany when Bayern Munich launch their Champions League defence at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday behind closed doors .
Having managed a record 21 assists in the Bundesliga last season, Mueller has continued his sparkling form by scoring five goals and creating four more so far in 2020 / 21 .
The 31 -year -old netted twice in a 4 -1 win at Arminia Bielefeld last Saturday when Robert Lewandowski also grabbed two goals for Bayern .
His latest eye -catching club performance has prompted fresh hopes of a Germany recall for Mueller, who was dropped by Joachim Loew from the national set -up in 2019 alongside Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels .
Now Bastian Schweinsteiger has joined fellow former Bayern and Germany players Didi Hamann and Lothar Matthaeus in calling for Mueller to be reinstated.
“ If I was national coach , Mueller as well as Boateng would be in the national side , ” Schweinsteiger , 36 , told Monday ’s edition of German magazine Kicker.
Schweinsteiger helped win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil alongside Mueller, who knows he still has plenty to offer Germany after 100 internationals and 38 goals for ‘ die Mannschaft ’.
“ Everyone can see that I am in good form . Let’ s just see what happens ,” Mueller told broadcaster ZDF on Saturday , yet Loew has so far showed no signs of reversing his decision .
Last month, Mueller became the most successful German footballer of all time — surpassing Schweinsteiger ’s record of 26 titles — when Bayern won the German Super Cup as he lifted a trophy for the 27 th time in his career .
After an early season plagued by tired legs and defensive wobbles, Bayern will need Mueller’ s creativity against an Atletico side who have conceded just one goal in four games so far this season.
Bayern , who won their first ever European Cup against Atletico back in 1974 , will begin their Champions League defence behind closed doors.
– Kimmich return -The Bavarians have a perfect record at home against Diego Simeone ’s side , having twice beaten them in Munich in 2016 .
Yet Atletico knocked Bayern out of the semi -finals in 2015 / 16 and the German side remain wary of their Spanish opponents .
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer warned that Atletico are a “ strong team ” who were “ uncomfortable” to play against .
“ The good thing is that the game is on Wednesday , so we have an extra day to prepare ,” said the Bayern captain .
After having less than a month between last season’s Champions League final and the first Bundesliga weekend , Bayern’ s relentless schedule has continued apace .
Wednesday ’s game will be their third in six days , while further Champions League fixtures against Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow mean Bayern have midweek and weekend games in each of the next three weeks.
The physical strain and the need to rotate has led to a few early -season hiccups .
Bayern suffered a shock 4 -1 defeat to Hoffenheim last month, and needed a late Robert Lewandowski penalty to seak a 4 – 3 win over Hertha Berlin before the international break .
On Saturday , Flick criticised his team for a poor second half performance , after individual errors led to a goal for Bielefeld and a red card for Bayern ’s Corentin Tolisso .
They can ill – afford a repeat against Atletico.
Others have also noted Bayern ’s lapses in concentration at the back , which has seen Neuer let in five goals in four league games so far .
Matthaeus has accused the champions of being “ passive ” and “ vulnerable” at the back this season.
Joshua Kimmich should bring more stability to Bayern’ s midfield , with the Germany midfielder expected to return after he missed last weekend ’ s game to be with his wife , who is expecting the couple’ s second child .
“ Joshua is very important for us against Atletico. I hope he can play ,” Flick told Sky .
